Magdalena was born March 8, 1931 to Ferdinand and Elisabeth (Ress) Tiefenbach in Lipovacz, Yugoslavia and came to the United States and Akron in 1955. She was a faithful Member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, German Family Society and the Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to cook, crochet, garden and bake and was known for her Saltzkiphel.

8/23/1934 - 4/5/2024


Traute Maria Gartner, 89, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away Friday, April 5, 2024. Traute was born Thursday, August 23, 1934 to the late Hans and Dora (Engleman) Kratz in Berlin, Germany and moved to the Akron area in 1956. She owned Gartner Barber and Beauty Shop with her husband.

Martha Elizabeth (Rickert) Guld

10/11/1946 - 5/5/2024


Martha was born in Vienna, Austria, on October 11, 1946, to Joseph and Mary Rickert who preceded her in death. She immigrated to the United States in 1951, where she would build a life full of love, faith, and service. Throughout her life, Martha was actively involved in the German Family Society, where she made lasting contributions. From her involvement in the youth group to teaching German classes and cooking for club events and weddings as part of the women's group, Martha's dedication and warmth touched the lives of many.

Elizabeth was born in Hungary and came to America when she was 16 with her mother and father, Barbara and Konrad Pilz, and brother Joseph Pilz. Elizabeth was an amazing cook and seamstress, and an active member of the German Family Society

Wilhelmine Kungl

6/24/1944 - 6/2/2024


Wilma was born on September 24, 1944 in Bad Nauheim Germany, where she enjoyed a loving childhood with her siblings and several cousins. At the young age of 19, Wilma met her “man in uniform” and made the very brave and courageous decision, on a leap of faith, to come to the US with the love of her life, Martin, leaving all of her family in Germany. Even though she made a new life in the US, she remained very proud of her German heritage and stayed very close to her family, visiting as much as possible.

Eva Lehner

8/8/1931 - 11/1/2023


Eva was born in Gaschinci, Yugoslavia on Aug. 8, 1931 to the late Franz and Theresia (Nebenfir) Berg. Her family fled Yugoslavia during the war and found themselves in a refugee camp in Linz, Austria. There Eva met and married her husband of 50 years, Andy Lehner. In 1952 they left Austria with 2 small children and immigrated to the United States. Eva was an active member of the German Family Society since 1960. She held many positions on the board and created a dance group of adults that performed in and outside of the club. She developed so many friendships over the years that the Society became her second family.

Henry Nagel

Margot (Müller) Nischt

Margot was born in 1927, in Mainz, Germany to Jakob and Margarete Müller. In 1963, she immigrated to the United States, along with her two young children and husband Peter. They made the city of Akron their new home. She was a dedicated member of the German Family Society in Brimfield, Ohio for over 60 years. During that time, she served as an active member of the Frauenschaft (Women’s Group), responsible for preparing delicious German food for major events like Oktoberfest. Margot was also a long-time member of the Golden Ring, a social group dedicated to serving the older members of the organization.

Kathlyn (Suess) Stein

Kathlyn was born in Hungary and came to the United States as a young girl. She married John Stein and they raised three children together. She was an active member of the German Family Society, and was a big GFS soccer supporter.
